What’s the first thing you used to think of when you hear the phrase ‘red and white checkered gingham’? A tablecloth at an Italian restaurant? The picnic blanket you’ve used for years?

Yes. Those answers are exactly right.

But then enter: SUMMER 2017. And gingham is everywhereeee.

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love it! So today I’m giving you a few tips on how to wear gingham and how you can rock a gingham vibe that screams “chic,” not “chow”.

Don’t Go Head-to-Toe

Ok, first off, this tip won’t apply to everyone, myself included. Because I have no problem rocking a full length gingham jumpsuit or maxi dress.

However, I also have a pretty bold sense of style and am not afraid to take fashion risks. So if you’re just starting out with the gingham trend, I advise you to start small.

For example, wearing an off the shoulder top such as the one I’m wearing by WAYF. It adds just a touch of red & white without being too overbearing. I picked up this top during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, and even though it wasn’t actually on sale, it was too cute not to snag! It fits comfortably and is flattering even though the fabric is quite full and flouncy.

Add Some Edge

I also advise you to add a few edgy accessories to your gingham look to prevent it from looking too “cutesy” and tablecloth-y. (lol)

I paired my gingham with some leather studded heels by Steve Madden that are on sale now for 50% off (that I’m completely obsessed with, btw.) and some rocker chic jewelry and rings. I also paired the gingham top with some black cutoff shorts from Free People, adding to the edgy factor.

Size Matters

Another tip when choosing the most wearable gingham is to make sure the checkers are smaller rather than larger. Large gingham screams “Sure! Put your pizza on top of me I’m a tablecloth!” (as demonstrated in this swimsuit!)

So try to stick to smaller patterns when selecting your gingham pieces. Another advantage of this is that smaller patterns overall make you look slimmer and thinner. I love this top that mixes 2 different sizes of gingham and this skirt for its simplicity, plus an added ruffle.

So what about you? Have you been rocking any gingham this season? What’s your favorite way to wear it? Let me know in the comments below!
