When I recently experimented with making my crab cake recipe, I knew I had to make a homemade, but healthy, tartar sauce to dip them in. I mean, what fun are crab cakes unless you can dip them into something just as delicious? This homemade tartar sauce with Greek yogurt is the perfect dipping sauce. For crab cakes, or anything else your heart desires.
I’m not a huge fan of mayonnaise, so I wanted to substitute something healthier that I wouldn’t have to feel guilty about eating in the New Year. (Yes, like many of us, I’m trying to start off 2021 on a somewhat healthy note!)
This healthy tartar sauce is made with creamy Greek yogurt and crisp, fresh dill, accented with a hint of tart citrus. And if you like dill pickles you’re in for a real treat because this recipe is chock full of that zesty, pickle-y goodness.
This sauce is so good you’re going to want to find all kinds of things to dip in it. Or, just eat it by itself. Trust me.
Homemade Tartar Sauce Recipe with Greek Yogurt
Here are a few notes on this recipe:
I used a 5% fat Greek yogurt for this recipe because I bought it by mistake (oops), but I actually like how it turned out. It’s super thick and creamy and I believe having that consistency really gives the sauce more a refreshing bite. You can also use a 0% or 2% fat Greek yogurt, but I believe the consistency will be a bit thinner.
I also recommend using a high quality dill pickle for this recipe. Any dill pickle that you can find in the refrigerated section of your grocery store should work. (please do not use the fluorescent green pickles that you find on a shelf – it won’t taste as delicious) I recommend either the Claussen brand kosher dills or the probiotic pickles from Trader Joe’s. Both are excellent for this recipe and really bring in that zesty pickle flavor.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup Greek yogurt
- 3/4 cup dill pickles (or 1 cup if you really like pickles), finely chopped (I use this brand of pickles)
- 1 tsp. fresh lemon juice
- 1/2 tsp. sugar
- 1.5 tsp fresh dill, finely chopped ( I use these herb scissors to finely cut herbs like dill & basil. Once you use them, you’ll never go back!)
- 1/4 tsp. black pepper
- pinch of salt, to taste
Directions:
Add all ingredients in a bowl and stir to combine. That’s it!
What to Serve with this Tartar Sauce
Serve as a side to your crab cakes, on top of fish tacos, or as a dipping sauce to any fried seafood dish. The creamy, cool yogurt really pairs well with any pan fried crab cake or fish dish.
If you try this recipe, I’d love to know how you like it!
