It’s no surprise that the dreaded winter months are upon us. The days are shorter, the sun is weaker, and it’s way more frigid outside. If your favorite season is summer like mine is, you may find winter to be stressful and hard to deal with.
Today I’m going to give you 5 ways to de stress in winter and help you to stay relaxed until those warmer, sunnier days arrive.
Diffuse Essential Oils
I am a big fan of diffusing essential oils as a natural way to help with relaxation and stress relief. One of my favorite diffusers can be found here. I love to add lavender oil and peppermint oil to bring my stress levels down. Both of these oils are known to have calming effects and can also be diffused before bedtime to wind down and prepare your mind and body for a restful night’s sleep.
Clean out the Clutter
Living in a cluttered environment can bring on unnecessary stress caused by disorganization. For example, let’s just say you can’t find your keys because they’re buried under 3 days worth of junk mail. What may have started out as a calm morning is quickly escalating into a stressful situation. You get flustered trying to find them, spend a couple minutes tossing things around looking, you finally find them, then worry if you’ll be late because of it, you’re super tense on your drive to work, and the domino effect goes on from there.
So, just take a few minutes to re-organize your situation, or just keep organized as you go.
I also find that I am way more productive at work when my desk is tidy and clutter-free. A clear desk=a clear mind. The same thing goes for your bedroom closet and anywhere else in your home used for storage.
Since we’re usually cooped up inside in the winter and not as likely to be taking part in outdoor activities, there is no better time to de-clutter. By doing this you’ll have more relaxing (and less stressful) days in your future.
Go to the Water
One of my favorite places to relax in the winter is the beach. Now, you might be thinking, “Why would I go to the beach in the winter?” But hear me out. The beach can be a place of relaxation in the winter, just as it is in the summer. You may have to wear a few extra layers (especially since the wind is usually stronger on the coast), but there is something about walking on the beach in the winter that is strangely calming. And watching the sun sparkling on the waves is always a welcomed stress reliever, no matter the season.
If you don’t live near a coastline, try going to a lake or nearby river to watch the current flow. Water has very soothing properties, whether it be river, lake, or ocean.
A Hot Bath
Speaking of water, there is nothing better at the end of a long, chilly day than to come home and soak in a nice hot bath. Add some Epsom salts for soothing muscle relief. I use these Epsom salts infused with essential lavender for a double dose of stress relief.
Now,dim the lights and light a scented candle to chill out in a relaxing spa-like environment.
A Cup of Tea , a Cozy Blanket & a Good Book
How about snuggling up on the couch with a nice warm cup of tea, a cozy blanket, and a good book? Once you’ve had enough of the couch, you can always jump into your bed with your new twin mattress (or whatever the size) to keep comfortable. The warm tea will soothe your body, and the book will temporarily transport your mind away from your own stressors and into a whole new world.
